C

C teaches how memory, pointers and the machine actually work, so expect to spend time with a debugger. Beej's Guide to C Programming and Essential C by Nick Parlante are approachable introductions, and Programiz's Learn C Programming course suits complete beginners. A Tutorial on Pointers and Arrays in C is worth reading once pointers start to confuse you.

For current standards and good habits, Modern C by Jens Gustedt is the strongest free option here. Project-based books build understanding fast: Build Your Own Lisp walks you through writing an interpreter, and The little book about OS development starts a small kernel. Beej's Guide to the GNU Debugger helps when programs crash in ways printf cannot explain.
